Help... my cal king started biting/trying to eat itself

any help would be great with this...
my old boy is 19 now, and has never done anything like this before.
today he was biting himself, i think tring to eat his tail, and was biting near his bottom, latched on and wouldnt let go, i eventually got him to let go at the advice of dunking him in water to get him to release...
why do they do this?? is he possibly going senile and not knowing he's doing it??
i fed him straight after, he had 2 adult size mice, and was a bit aggressive with striking them and eating...
am thinking old age, but any other thoughts would be great guys...
really thought he was gonna keel over today, am dreading getting up and seeing him dead from eating himself

I think Snakes do this when they get old and go a bit mad. I have heard of peoples snakes doing this before they die so he maybe coming to the end of his life.
