Hi - I have just adopted a 9 year old male Royal Python named Spot, who is about 4 foot long. The guy we got him from gave us a viv and stuff but I'm not sure it is suitable. Any advice would be appreciated.
4 foot long viv with a ceramic heat lamp & guard at one end and heat mat at the same end, both on thermostat. Heat mat is in the tank, under newspaper and bark chips. There is a plant pot hide at hot end and log hide at other end. I think the viv may be too large for this breed of snake, but it looks nice and he has lots of room to slither about!
I am worried about using the heat mat as I have read online that they can overheat. I have turned it off for the time being to be on the safe side. Is the ceramic heater sufficient on its own?
Also, there is no humidity control - do I need to put moss in one or both hides for this?
I don't own a royal so i am no expert but you don't need a mat as weal as a ceramic I would just use the ceramic. I think that size Viv would be OK for the age of the snake as he is not that young so he can handle a bigger enclosure but maybe someone else can help you a bit better.

Hi Jo and welcome, yes you can put in a moss hide it will help with humidity you dont really need both heat mat and bulb - especially at the same end what are your temps in there?
